The dessert specialty shop in Cooper Young has closed its doors.
Sweet Bistro is yet another locally owned, independent restaurant to close up shop and another loss to the now more and more vacant looking corner of Cooper and Young. (EDIT: This sentence was removed due to new info about Blue Fish NOT closing) Hopefully Burke's Books can hold it down and remain standing long enough to weather the economic storm.
The owner of Sweet cited the economy as the reason for the closing. Everytime I walked by or saw it at night it was packed though so I wonder if anything else came into play on the decision. A lot of folks get into owning a new business and don't realize all of other costs that come along with it and get in over their head with bad business, management and finance decisions.
So the best of luck to everyone that worked there and hopefully something new will come along to replace it soon!
You can read the entire article about the closing HERE in the Memphis Daily News.

Very sad to see sweet go...
From what I understand from taking to some of their folks, they were having a hard time getting the word out. One of the big problems was that some of the weekday traffic was lagging and some people didn't know that they had more than desserts.
They will be very much missed. I too hope that Burke's is able to keep going.
I hate to hear this news about Sweet. My wife and I enjoyed going there.
I won't be too sad about Blue Fish though, way overpriced. Not to mention Tsunami is down the street and is 10x better.
I read about Sweet on whiningdining.com and I had the same opinion as others who had commented on there - while the food was good, the wait staff was...not. Too bad though, it was a neat concept and I'm sorry it didn't work out for them.
i'm sad sweet is closing. it had great potential and a fantatsic spot to take a romantic interest. but, in fairness, the food and desserts were far from stellar and the cocktails were overpriced, considering there was rarely a knowledgeable bartender on duty.
ryan, that's the first i've heard about dish moving.
take that as you will, heh.
what anthony bourdain says in "kitchen confidential" about how just because your friends say "your (fill in the blank) is so good, you should open a restaurant!" doesn't mean you'd make a good restaurateur - that seems to me to have been sweet's downfall. i've heard accounts from a few media folks that the lady who ran the place was impossible to get a hold of and screwed herself out of a lot of free publicity. i also heard tales of bad service, unskilled bartenders, stale cake, you name it. shame because it's a good concept and i think someone with a little more know-how could have made it work.
Yeah Memphis has a bunch of folks who will open a eatery and then refuse to place ads, refuse to accept free promotions, and just refuse to promote!! Ohh well the owner will be alright!!
