Looks like Mellow Mushroom has snuck into Memphis. I've been wanting to see one of these things in town for years but now that it's finally here I have to wonder, why in the world did you put it out in Germantown????
It seems like whenever I'm in a town with a Mushroom, it's in a college area or midtown type area. This one is way out in Germantown near Forest-Hill Irene at the old Old Navy store off Poplar. I'm sure the families will eat it up and I feel sorry for the Memphis Pizza Cafe over in Saddlecreek having to compete with this. Here is the following info about the new business straight from the Memphis Business Journal...
Mellow Mushroom, a fast casual pizza chain featuring an impressive beer selection, is sprouting up in the Memphis market, with an initial Germantown location and up to three more planned in the next five years.
Cary Fairless and Lori Fairless, operating as Jadon Enterprises LLC, signed a long-term, 5,000-square-foot lease at the Shops of Forest Hill, occupying the 17,000-square-foot former Old Navy space at 3075 Village Shops Drive

I agree, why Germantown? Snore. Should be in midtown.
Nobody can beat Memphis Pizza Cafe. I'm predicting a one and done, especially since they were crazy enough to put one in Germantown.
If you don't believe me, walk into any MPC and order a random pie off the menu. The proof is in the pudding.
Sorry, Mushroom. You'll make decent money for the first year, but once the novelty wears off, you're finished in Shelby County.
Memphis Pizza Cafe in Midtown and East Memphis are two of my favorites. Having said that, the Germantown location has lousy service, so if Mushroom has better service, I see them kicking MPC-Germantown's tail easily.
Same reason why other sit-down fast casual chains hit the suburbs first. I would rather not have sub-par chain restaurants moving into midtown to the potential detriment of our great, local businesses. And since we're on the topic of pizza, I encourage everyone to try Lou's Pizza on Young Avenue.
Them's fighting words. Mellow Mushroom beats MPC by a freaking mile. I lived in Atlanta for years and lived off MM pizza and have been dying for it to come here. Now, granted, Memphians are not quick to embrace the new, but this pizza is so much better than anything in this town, my bet is it succeeds. Its going to get a ton of my cash, thats for sure. Outstanding salads and calzones too. The calzones in this town are horrible.
Yeah why not midtown because it's soooo cool and unique and germantown is soooo boring!? Well for one I'm assuming they need the big space that the old Old Navy store offers. Plus, it's not too far from Mike Rose which will mean quite a bit of business. I don't think they will be hurting for business, though. And as far as which is better, Mellow Mushroom is better than MPC hands down. You midtowners need to get over yourselves.
When I was in school in Tuscaloosa there was a Mellow Mushroom which, in that town, was actually one of the preferable places to eat. It's still a crap chain with very ordinary food. The thought that anyone could believe that MM is better than Memphis Pizza Cafe absolutely destroys my faith in humanity. Now I wish I was dead, thank you very much.
