You know, for years now I have whined and moaned that whenever I had late night studying or work to do and couldn't concentrate in the house, my only options were bars. All the good coffee shops around midtown close way too early and I refuse to go to Starbucks so they are out of the questions before you suggest that. But FINALLY someone has come along to offer a solution. Even though, I'm done with school now and are never up late working anymore since I'm too busy sleeping, but still, it's a great addition to the community.
The place I'm talking about is called the Edge. It's located over in the Evergreen district, near Crosstown in the building that formerly housed XYZ and before that I think it was a Mexican place years ago with the name "Bea's" in the name. I really don't know but I can tell you that it's at the corner of Overton Park and Watkins and you should check it out.
The Memphis Flyer just did a write up on it so I'll link you to that and take a few choice excerpts from that to give you a little more info.
The Edge has brought back the Avalanche, its signature double-espresso milkshake, and its other natural-disaster-themed coffee beverages. The restaurant also has free wireless connections (the Edge was one of the first coffee shops in Memphis to offer Internet access way back in the day when it was located in the building that now houses the hi-tone), pool tables, live music, and art exhibits.
The Edge is open daily from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. The owner plans a grand opening at the beginning of September. For details, visit theedgecoffeehouse.com.

Lupe & Bea's Texican restaurant. It was almost as good as Panchos.
Ah, nerts. Someone beat me to the 'Lupe & Bea's Texican' info.
Was there last night to see Jason Freeman play. It was fun and their coffee milkshakes are pretty damn good too.
