If anyone is off work/school tonight and doesn't have anything going on, there is this thing at the Brooks Museum in Overton Park called 1st Wednesdays. Its a thing they do on the 1st Wednesday of every month and tonight features quite a few interesting things to do. Ill just start off with the most interesting event of the evening. EAT - an Indie Memphis Film about the restaurant experience from a worker¹s point of view. Introduced by director Chris McCoy at 7:30 pm. For anyone working in the restaurant industry this film is justification and proof that someone is trying to share our lifestyles and hardships with the world. It was shown at the local Memphis indie film festival a few months back to much acclaim but this is the first place Ive seen it being out for the public since then. Unfortunately, I have to work out at Jarrett's tonight and cant go. But, if the movie doesn't catch your interest there is also a wine tasting type of thing there as well provided by Buster's liquors. Its 6 different wines and cheeses and its only 10 bucks. I'd be willing to bet from past experience that you'll be leaving with alot more wine in you than 10 bucks would normally provide, plus some choice cheeses. If anyone checks it out let me know how it is, especially the movie. Id love to get a DVD copy of it somewhere too if anyone knows anything about that.

Burke's Books replacement

So I'm sure most of you know about Burke's Books, one of Memphis' best independent bookstores, moving from its longtime home on Poplar Ave. I live in the nearby Evergreen Historic District so I'm particularly sad to see it go , for fear that another tanning salon or dry cleaners will move into the vacant building. Well according to The Commercial Appeal and Jennifer Chandler, none of us have anything to worry about! In an article published in Jennifer's new column, she reveals that the space will be filled by a small, independently owned market. The great news is that this market will be run by the original owner of The Squash Blossom, which for years was Memphis' best place to find fresh and natural foodstuffs before wild oats and fresh market came to town. Jimmy Lewis is the man behind this store and I, for one, cannot wait for his re-emergence in the midtown scene! A great community/neighborhood centered market will be a wonderful addition to midtown and to the neighborhood. So mourn the loss of Burke's Books, but look forward to and support the new Jimmy's Market, which is set to open in November. You can check out the little blurb in Jennifer's article here.....its about midway through and just a few sentences.
